Broadening my horizons. . .

so to speak! I decided I'm going to try and listen to a new band or artist every week, for the purposes of my blog because it should give me somthing to write about. Any suggestions let me know but don't get annoyed if I don't like your fave band!

Blogs to riches

Is it possible to make money from a simple blog just like this? According to Clive Thompson from the New York Metro it can be. Proved by Pete Rojas who made millions when AOL bought Weblogs which included his blog Engadget. Interesting article, although very long even if it is separated onto six pages.

According to Clive there are three different types of blogger; The accidental tourist, the record label approach and the Boutiquie approach. The most common being the accidental tourist. This is any normal person like you or me simply starting a blog for fun, but then it becomes more popular than you could hope.

It seems that blogs become popular by other bloggers linking them. The more links a blog has to it the more likely it is to be in the A-list of blogs, a bit like celebrities. Bit of a weird concept if you ask me but someone actually took the time to do this!

To actually make money you have to get into advertising on your blog and it all gets a bit complicated. But who knows, if your blog gets that many visitors you could make money from it.

Why do people use the internet?

The Oxford Internet Institute is a site dedicated to researching internet usage. It has a very long PDF on how many people have the internet in their homes, how often they use it etc. Useful if that's what you want to know, but it could take a while to read through it all.

It's no surprise that more people have the internet in their homes now, more than even two years ago. It's much more accessable these days: easier to use, quicker and cheaper. The most popular use of the internet is to check emails, which makes sense. I guess a lot of people just have an email address but don't do much else. Of course there are many more uses, and everyone uses the net for different purposes, so you're always going to reach someone.

Where is Raed?

(Work for online journlism 17/02/06)

The where is raed? blog isn't the sort of thing I would normally read. I found this really interesting though. It doesn't seem to be written like anything else I've read about Iraq. It's written in a more relaxed way, almost like a diary. It makes it easier to read. I would say that it could pass as journalism, as it is very informative. I found it interesting to read. It's a different view of what was happening in baghdad.

It started as a way of Raed keeping in touch with Salem Pax and then was just written by Pax. One post stood out in which the Baghdad blogger is trying to get in touch with Salem Pax. After that there are no more posts from Raed. It would be interesting to find out what happened to him.

(continued)

(continued from previous post, because it doesn’t seem to want to post it all and keeps cutting out half of what I write).

. . .myspace music page, and I’m glad I did. I guess you could call her music girly pop rock. There’s a good mixture ballads and more upbeat rocky songs on the album. My faves are probably LaLa and Unreachable. Sounds a bit like Avril Lavigne in places, only better. Definitely worth a listen, although more for the girls I’d say, unless like my brother you fancy her.

So, it was the Brits last night (although it’s on TV right now). Kaiser Chiefs did alright for themselves. All I can say is I’m glad that James Blunt’s so called beautiful song didn’t win best single, because I hate that song. Although Coldplay did and I don’t see what the fuss is about there either, is it just me? Oh no, that song’s on now, help! (At least it was the first time I typed this). Check out all the winners for yourself.

Me, Ashlee Simpson and the Brits.

Just thought I should let you know a bit about what music I'm into. I'm pretty much open to anything. I mean, my two favourite bands are McFly and My Chemical Romance and you can't really get much more different than that. Except drum and bass. I can't stand drum and bass music, just so you know.

For the last week or so i've mostly been listening to Ashlee Simpson's first album, Autobiography. I say first album because she brought out a new one recently. If you're not sure who she is, she's the sister of the probably slightly more famous Jessica Simpson (star of Newlyweds on MTV). I meant to get this album when it first came out but for some reason I didn't. I decided to finally get it after coming across her...
